5Nice all around running shoe  Sep 05, 2008
By KeyDataMan
Everyone's foot is different. My wife always buys Nike because they fit her foot well. But they are too narrow for me. New Balance shoes fit me just right. The 479 has a cozy heal cup while slightly wider in the front. The arch hits just the right place. I use them for both trail and street running. The shoes are light yet offer plenty of support and cushion the impact well.

By the way, Amazon is less expensive than REI and Sports Authority.

5My favorite trail runner/hikers ever  Sep 04, 2011
By Roaming Together "Digital Nomad"
I'm on my 4th pair of these now, and I'm in love. I play racquetball every weekday morning in them, and workout at the gym every night in them. Weekends finds us on the beach or hiking in the mountains in them, with never a missed beat.

I agree with the one poster complaining about the long shoelaces, they are indeed ridiculously long so I just put multiple knots in them.

The two spots that wear out the first for me are the lugs on the front of the sole below my toes, and the rubber lip that comes over the front of the toes. I'm extremely hard on the shoes though, and I don't think that any of my pairs have failed through regular use, just excessive abuse.

We posted a skippy little piece on them today on our personal Roaming Together.com site - [...].

5Big man lots of walking  Nov 29, 2011
By Canviskiller
I work at walmart and walk 6 miles+ a day (according to my pedometer.my old shoes would leave me in shambles after a 8 hour shift...with these i could easily go for a jog after work and still have no pain, only bad thing is that these IMO are pretty ugly in a fashion sense but oh well.

Im also 240lbs and have been through atleast 7 pairs of shoes before finding these.

5More like an awesome dayhiker!  Jun 27, 2011
By Pete Paxton
I have different trail running shoes but my New Balance 479's seem more like a day hiker than a trail runner. They have a very thick sturdy sole and heel. A great aggressive tread on the sole. Sturdy uppers that really hold my foot in place. Very lightweight. And great looking. Just hiked 7 miles at Silver Creek Falls and they did great. They feel more like a Merrell or North Face day hiker than a running shoe. Becoming my new favorite hiking shoe along with my Columbia Kaibabs (which also feel more like a trail runner than these do).

4New Balance 479  Mar 18, 2009

Good pair of shoes. I looked forward to getting them, and have worn them regularly since receiving them. Comfortable and sturdy; they give good footing too (that's important because I recently had knee surgery so stability is crucial right now).
