5Great shoes  Oct 24, 2009
By Richard Gengler
I bought these shoes for working in the yard and moving grass with a push mover. They are amazingly water proof when walking through wet grass; the water just runs off. They are sturdy enough and stiff enough to comfortably walk over rock pile or branches or dig with a shovel. The toe cap gives good protection but is still flexible. It seems that they are well made and will last a long time.

3Comfortable but Cheap fabric wears  May 05, 2010
By K. Sartain
I've had a pair of these for about 9 months now. I bought them because I need a wide (4E) shoe and because of NB's reputation. I wear these on a daily basis and they don't see much rugged use. I mostly walk a couple of miles a day on pavement or hard floors. If I used them outdoors in a more rugged environment they would have not lasted well at all. They are very comfortable shoes right out of the box, so I like that. The thing that's really disappointing is the cheap mesh fabric they used around the top rim of the shoe. It's totally worn through, especially at the top where you slide your heel down into the shoe and also the section next to the laces at the top. If it weren't for this I'd top rate the shoe. They could have very easily used some soft leather around the rim which would hold up much better. At this price point I don't think a little piece of leather to make these shoes a bit more rugged would be unreasonable. I like the style and the comfort. I'd give these 2 1/2 stars. I'm going to be searching for another brand.

1Not A True 4E Fit  Oct 17, 2009
By Billy Mac "Billy Mac"
I've been a New Balance fan for easily 20 years. Sadly their quality continues to waiver in my opinion. You can no longer assume that the size you have worn over the years will be close in fit. Now I realize they offer their lower end product to compete and you might expect deviation there but Im speaking of their higher end series shoes.
So do not expect these to come in as a typical 4E width. They fit much tighter and are very stiff. The quality control is just not in place on their imported products. This would not make a good walking shoe.
I made the mistake of hoping they might loosen up a bit and of course they did not. I should have known better.
It was an expensive mistake.

1new balance MW955  Jan 14, 2011
By bigstorm
This is the first higher end shoe from new balance that I have been disappointed in. While I ware a 13d and have been satisfied with other new balance shoes. This shoe is narrower than all other 13d's and it is not a true d width. I have worn the shoe a month and I'm beginning to see the stitching on the lower part of the shoes stretch. This area seems to be coming loose with ware over this short period of time. For the price I expected better quality of workmanship. This is sold as a rugged walking/hiking shoe, and the only walking I've been doing is to the mall and work. I guess I will not venture out anymore from their sneakers anymore.

4Good Shoe, a Bit Narrow  Apr 04, 2011
By bearclawthedonut
New Balance 955 is NOT a low version of the old 977 or the new 978. That is what I was hoping for. I wanted a lower, lighter weight version of the 977 (I have three pair) to wear during the summer. The 955 weighs every bit as much as the 977. A bit dissapointing. The 955 is a pretty good shoe, but not as good as the mid-height 977.

Deficiencies:
1. It's heavy. Why does it weigh as much or more than the larger 977?
2. It's narrow. I normally wear a 10.5 3E; so when I purchase New Balance shoes I order 11.5 4E. Everyone knows that new balanced shoes are sized short. You always order one size larger with New Balance. A New Balance 11 is still a bit short for me, so I go with the 11.5. As they do not make a 3E, I go with the 4E. In this case the shoe that I received is labled an 11.5 4E, but its actually an E or a 2E at best. Narrow. It is a NB 11.5 in length. As a consequence, a prolonged break-in period was required.

Pros:
1. After break-in, it is a comfortable shoe. My break-in includes adding a $30 "sports" insole below the NB insole for additional cushioning. With larger/wider NB 977's, I discard the NB insole and add a second "Sports" insole. I like cushioning. I do not believe that I will be able to add the second "sports" insole to the NB 955's as they are too tight for two stacked "Sports" insoles.

The NB955 are comfortable after prolonged break-in, but they are not sized correctly. That is, if any NB sizing can be considered correct. Why does NB size their shoes short? A question for the Gods.

The narrow width takes me back to the old days, 20 years ago when wide shoes were very difficult to find. Back then, the most cost effective way for shoe manufacturers to make/sell "wide" shoes was to put a normal "D" width shoe in a box with a "wide" lable on it. New balance was one of the first shoe manufacturers to actually make a wide shoe. The 955 will not make any new friends for New Balance. Purchase it with caution.
