Not yet trail tested... Dec 28, 2011
By C. Mills
"fueled by coffee"
Before beginning this review, I have to point out the unusual nature of my feet. I have extremely wide feet, and virtually no arch. So most of my shoes rub at the base of my little toes, and I experience a lot of pain in the ball of my feet. So take that into consideration when looking at these shoes, and this review.
Appearance: These shoes are quite attractive, with a hint of vintage K-Swiss to the toes. The grey and blue together is up-to-date without the screaming neon that characterizes so many styles currently on the market. There are not a lot of lacing holes, so if you need a stiffer shoe for over-pronation, this may not work for you. There's a fun topographical design on the inside of the sneaker, hinting at the purpose of the shoe, namely: trail running. I also found the "right" and "left" graphic on the inserts a nod to classic comic book lettering - pow! down the trail indeed.
Feel: As soon as I put these on I was surprised by how light they are. I have another pair of running shoes that are nowhere near as lightweight and comfortable as these are. Given the width of my feet, I was pleasantly surprised to see that these have enough space across the ball and toes to accomodate me. The tongue shows a little of my sock, about 1/4in. worth on the right foot, although someone with much narrower feet would have no problem. They're flexible, and my toes move easily, and I am able to arch my foot a bit and have them flex. It will be interesting to see how this plays out on a trail, although I imagine I will appreciate a shoe that moves with me. The arch support is not very high, although with my feet, I actually feel it. It is certainly not supportive enough for high arches, but my arch feels well cradled without being pushed. The heel support comes up about average height, but the lightweight nature of the fabric keeps it from rubbing. My low profile socks do slip down some because of heel friction, but that can be remedied by a different pair of socks.
Performance: As noted by the title of the review, I haven't yet gotten these on the trail. I've been doing some light cardio in them, to see how they work with my feet merely striking a level surface - No pain across the foot, and they are pretty grippy when landing. I will update the review once I get them outside, to see how they do.
All in all, I'm happy so far. They're attractive, light weight running shoes that accomodate my wide foot as well as my low arch, and have enough graphic design influence to make me feel like I'm wearing age appropriate shoes (I'm 31, and in college).
