3forefoot cushioning lacking  Jul 23, 2011
By ChefBum "chefbum"
Sixty bucks is a lot for a pair of flip flops. Still, I got a pair of the X-S-1s because I completely wore out two pairs of the original Reef Fannings. The X-S-1 is very similar to the Fanning sandal, even including a plastic beer bottle opener in the sole. The original Fanning's bottle opener is metal.

The X-S-1 sports a thicker, more high tech heel area. It's like that plastic trampoline style heel that Nike pioneered with their Shox and many running shoes have a similar design. This makes the X-S-1 have superior heel cushioning and support compared to the Fanning. The forefoot design and thickness is exactly the same as the Fanning, however, and that's the area in which both sandals are lacking. Because the heel is taller in the X-S-1, it also gives the wearer more of a sensation of wearing heels.

If they had just given the X-S-1s another 1/4" or so of forefoot padding and thickness, they would've had a winner. As it is, it is easy to stub your toe in these thongs because the forefoot area under the toes and the ball of the foot is so thin.

Still, this is a comfortable thong to wear. It's better than the Sperry Topsider Santa Cruz in many ways, but it is not the best high quality thong for extended walking. That award goes to the Teva Katavi, which is, for me, perfect in almost every way. It's also significantly cheaper than the X-S-1, if not as high tech.

5Unbelievable!!!  Apr 30, 2011
By K. Denahy
After going through two pairs of Reef Fanning sandals over the past few years, I decided to give these a try. The are without a doubt worth the extra money. To me Reef have the most comfortable sandals out there, so I wanted to stay with the brand. I'm a bigger guy and I need comfort and cushioning, these definitely have that. Fannings are great sandals, but I will never go back to them after wearing these X-S-1's....amazing.

5The comfiest sandals I could find  Aug 06, 2011
By Pot Purchaser
These are pretty freakin' incredible flip flops. I tried on all the comfy-looking sandals at a well-known coop sports store, and these blew me away. My cheap Target-brand sandals were 2 or 3 years old and causing heel pain, so I wanted maximum comfort and arch support. Now I can walk over miles of hard, hot pavement in these, and my feet feel great at the end of the day. I think these provide the most support available in a sandal/flip-flop without a heel strap, and that these are the closest that such a flip-flop can feel to a good athletic shoe. Spending this much on a pair of flip flops may seem crazy, but remember that more comfort and support translate to less wear and tear on your body, which obviously needs to last you your entire life.

5Awesome new reefs model!  May 28, 2011
By NY Beach Bum
I ordered these reefs before seeing them in person based on the fact that I need a new pair every year, and this year their other styles were a little lacking in extremely unique designs. When I got these they looked awesome with the new bottom design, and turned out to be even more comfortable than any reefs I've ever had before. Adtionaly, they seem be a lot more quiet with the traditional 'flip-flip' sounds, but that could just be because they're new and haven't stretched out yet. The bottle opener on the bottom is in a bit of a different location than on other reefs but it's still just as easy to use.
While I wish they came in some more out-there colors, it's their first year and I'm sure that when reef sees that they are going to be popular, they will offer a lot more eventually.

5Most comfortable sandals out there  Apr 25, 2011
By Btownaz
These are made from high quality materials, and are very comfortable, and worth every penny. They take about a weekend to break in but once you do that it is like walking on air.
