Handsome and comfy. Perhaps not really a "hiking boot." Sep 30, 2011
By 4thGenTeg Picked up a pair of these recently because they were on sale, I like Rockport, and they were very comfortable right away. The leather is light, soft and thin, a bit like glove leather, perforated in several places on each side, making them quite cool on the feet.
They've been exceptionally comfortable so far. The lacing system has the stretchy loops and well-padded tongue loosely called "ghillie" or "gilley" laces, although I don't think that's technically what that term means. It makes for a quick, secure, comfortable fit that's especially easy on the top of the foot. They feel true to my size, although my sense is they are a bit on the narrow size, so the wide-footed should be warned. But as far as fit goes, the stretchy leather affords some flexibility. These needed no break-in period. Arch support is light-to-medium.
The soles are grippy and have channels to disperse water, but the lugs are smallish and not very aggressive. They provide a well-padded, somewhat cushy walk but with good support.
They give a bit of ankle support, but my size 10s are only 5" tall at the highest point of the collar. Based on that, combined with the lightweight, thin, non-waterproof leather and only mildly aggressive soles, I'd say the Chawa Gilleys are more like a sleek leather high-top sneaker with hiking boot styling than an actual hiking boot. They even remind me a bit of a driving shoe. I actually changed out of them (and into a much heavier pair of Rockports) to hit the trail the other day because I didn't want to get the little sweethearts dirty.
Overall, this is a good-looking, lightweight, well-ventilated leather shoe with sleek, outdoorsy styling and good Rockport ergonomics. I'd recommend it as a comfy all around casual shoe and light-duty Spring-to-Fall walking / driving shoe. If you're looking to take on even semi-serious hiking or harsh weather conditions, I'd suggest something sturdier.
Four stars.

super-lite supple leather Jul 03, 2011
By Michael J. Cox This is a great soft supple leather low height lite-weight boot, very flexable and the laces draw evenly and easy, The only issue would be that the medium width is a little narrow and takes a while to spread so if your foot is anything close to a wide fitting GET THE WIDE !

My husband loved it the day he put it on his feet. Good material but it is not water proof. But we're very happy with our purchase.
