How to improve comfort and not raise a stink .... Dec 28, 2010

...at the same time.
The Atwood is a bit of a step up from the "Authentic" line of Vans shoes; there are soooo many different style lines it is hard to figure out what you're wearing.
The Atwood has some classy and comfort upgrades over their all-canvas brethren. The uppers are made with fine suede leather and canvas. The vamp (the part that covers the front of your foot) is made entirely of the suede and the heel cup is trimmed out in suede also; the balance of the shoe is made of canvas. The ankle collar is thinly padded and the interior is partially lined (heel area only) with a soft nylon material. The insole is the usual cheap dense foam type that's glued in place. The soles are Vans classic "waffle" tread that look like they are made of true gum rubber but are a harder (most likely cheaper) rubber ...which probably wears longer but isn't near as "grippy' as a real gum rubber sole.
The Atwoods fit about a half-size small; I wear an 8.5 mens but got these in a size 9. There's plenty of width in these Vans and the lacing allows you you snug or fit them whether you're wearing thick socks, light socks or no socks.
Overall these are some really nice looking Vans ...a really nice pair of casual sneaks. I wish the same could be said for their "out-of-the-box" comfort. I don't expect to have to "break in" sneakers but these Vans were consistently giving me blisters along the back edges of both my heels.
I tried different socks, different lacing techniques but to no avail. It wasn't until a careful look at how the shoe was constructed did I find the problem. On my pair of Atwoods, the insole did not fit well ...it was too small for the shoe and as such didn't go all the way into the heel cup area leaving a small gap at the back of each shoe ...just enough to cause blisters. The insole also didn't go completely to the toe end either ...but that wasn't causing problems ...other than showing off some poor quality control on the part of Vans.
My solution, and one I think everyone who owns a pair of Vans or is contemplating buying a pair should consider, is to rip out the cheesy canvas-faced foam insole and replace it with a good grade running shoe or similar insole like you find at most big box stores (Target,WalMart, Sports Authority, etc). With the new insoles my Vans are *way* more comfortable, fit better and feel better and no more blisters. Buy insoles with an anti-microbial treatment and it'll help keep your Vans (and your feet) from raising a stink.
I bought these on a buy-one-get-one-half-off sale so I "only" paid $23 for them. Had I paid the full 40 plus dollars on them they would have rated a one star ...for style. Vans are popular shoes and the selling prices reflect it. The guys at Vans are making a healthy profit on these Chinese-made shoes so I figure the least they could do is ramp up the quality control and definitely put some better insoles in them. Maybe we should start raising a stink.
My sons first pair of VANS! May 31, 2011
By JDinVA My son wanted a pair of vans much like the ones I had. We went to numerous stores around my area but could not find any in his size. We found these in his size and they were the same style he was looking for. They came to us quickly and were exactly as described. I do reccomend getting a half size larger, which we did, as they seem to run a tad smaller than their published size.
